Call on your Dean

The Health and Social Care bill wangles its way through parliament, and despite its length, huge number of amendments and the massive changes it poses to our NHS – it doesn’t contain anything about education of future health professionals!

The government promises this is to come in a future bill – but after all their nonsense so far, do we believe them? It’s time that those in charge of educating the doctors of the future speak out. Medical students – call on your Dean to make some noise about this damaging bill.

A suggested template letter is here, but feel free to use your own. The crucial part is that education of medical students should not be an ‘afterthought’ but be an integral part of any NHS reform:

Dear Dean x,
I write to you as a medical student at yyy. I have major concerns over the Health and Social Care Bill currently in the House of Lords and ask that you speak out and oppose this damaging bill.

The Bill has been seriously debated in Parliament and threatens education and training of future medical students and doctors. The draft legislation does not fully consider the training needs of medical and other healthcare professionals, and needs urgent rethinking.

In particular, it is unclear whether new providers in the NHS will have a duty to train future professionals, and whether the intended massive increase in non-NHS provision of NHS care will diminish training opportunities for students. Although the government have promised a further bill to be tabled specifically about education and training, this remains an unsatisfactory situation. Education and training needs to form an essential part of NHS reform.

Our medical leaders are lobbying against the legislation because they can see its flaws. Please join them in making it clear that the government must think again.

I would be very happy to discuss this further, and would be much obliged if you would raise this with the Medical Schools Council who I understand are meeting on 10 February 2012.

Yours sincerely,
